Kinetic artist Hsiao Sheng-Chien's sound-mechanical installation "Afternoon" can simulate birds chirping and the bugs singing with artificial mechanical noise. In the sounds produced by the mechanical products of industrial civilization, look for the familiar sounds that gradually disappear from memory.

The rise of contemporary industrial society has irrevocably altered both our way of life and the surroundings. Nature's scenery gradually disappears, and in the memory, the croaking of crickets and frogs in the fields is replaced by the noise of people and cars. In order to reproduce the voices in my childhood memories, I tried to find the familiar voices in my childhood memories in the sounds produced by the mechanical products of industrial civilization.

On a summer afternoon, the little bit of sunlight shone dreamily on the ground through the gaps in the leaves. A cool breeze occasionally blows the branches and leaves at the top of the tree as I sit underneath it and shake a paper fan. The sound of the wind's footsteps could be heard rustling through the treetops. Accompanied by the sound of cicadas all around, it is the leisurely scenery of childhood in my memory. In today's hectic urban life, it is difficult to find the scenery from memory.

The noise made by the toy gear box is connected to the summer cicadas in my memory. The swaying tree shadows of my hometown in the afternoon are brought to mind by the light and shadow effect the projection lamp creates through the kitchen aluminum foil with many tiny holes, as well as the rustling sound created by shaking the plastic tape drawn out of the tape. I feel as though I've gone back in time as the old advertising fan slowly shakes.
